As the future of Twitter remains uncertain, Meta throws his hat in the ring to build the next big microblogging platform. According to an email shared with a select group of developers and viewed by TechCrunch, this new meta-app is expected to launch this summer.
This text-based app will be standalone but partially integrated with Instagram. Users will keep their Instagram verification and account, and all their followers will receive a notification to follow them on the to-be-named platform. Meta’s text-based platform will be decentralized and interoperable with Mastodon, which is based on the ActivityPub protocol.
Meta is looking to attract high-profile public figures for early access, including athletes, actors, producers, showrunners, and comedians. In its message to these developers, Meta acknowledged that Mastodon, Bluesky, and other apps had a head start in the race to create the next Twitter. However, the company pointed out that it has the advantage of having access to billions of users through its family of apps, which includes Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger.
This new decentralized app is codenamed P92 or Barcelona as first reported MoneyControl. Meta has not commented on these developments, but said in a statement to Money Control, “We are looking into a standalone decentralized social network to share text updates.” We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space dedicated to creatives and personalities of public life can be promptly informed about their interests.”
According to Lia Haberman, author of Social media newsletter ICYMI, the app uses the same community guidelines as Instagram. Likewise, users can log in with their Instagram credentials, Instagram blocks and hidden words are inherited, and some security features are built in from the start, such as: B. Two-factor authentication and spam reporting. Haberman’s sources also told her that text posts will be up to 500 characters long and users can also upload photos, links and videos up to five minutes in length. As with Twitter and other competing apps, there will be a feed where you can like, reply, or repost content.
Social Media Consultant Matt Navarre received the same information that he had provided a tweet posted earlier this month.
Meta declined TechCrunch’s request for further comment, but did not dispute the accuracy of the leaked information.
The market is ripe for new Twitter alternatives, but after migrating to a variety of platforms, some users might be a bit weary at the prospect of setting up yet another new account. Like any other company, it’s not always the case that Meta launches new apps and experiences. Products like anonymous teens app, Cameo-like app Super, Nextdoor clone Neighborhoods, couples app Tuned, student-focused social network Campus, video-dating service Sparked, and more have all been discontinued in recent years .
