BEIJING: China said it took action in more than a year 1 million social media posts and accounts in its latest online content moderation campaign, which it deems malicious.
Authorities have permanently suspended 66,000 accounts and cracked down on 928,000 others as part of the action that began in March, China’s cyberspace regulator said in a statement on Saturday. As of May 22, more than 1.41 million online posts were also edited within these accounts.
Violations included accounts or posts that spread rumours, impersonated government or news agencies, or misused social causes for profit.
As part of its promise to create a harmless online environment and fight content deemed harmful to society, Beijing has stepped up its regulatory measures targeting the misinterpretation of financial information, the exploitation of children, or the potential abuse of algorithms in social media target media.
The crackdown on online content is also part of a broader tightening of technology sector regulation that internet giants like Tencent Holdings Ltd. charged. Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and ByteDance Ltd, operators of the most popular commercial platforms for Chinese social media users.
